A decision, not a reflex
When an older aircon starts giving trouble, it is tempting either to keep patching it or to replace the whole system at the first fault. Neither is always right. A unit with one worn part can run well for years after a repair, while a unit that fails again and again may cost more to keep alive than to replace.
This article helps you weigh the three main options: a repair, a chemical overhaul and a replacement. It does not repeat how each job is done. The aircon repair guide, the chemical overhaul guide and the aircon installation guide cover those in detail.
When a repair makes sense
A repair is usually the sensible first step when the fault is isolated and the rest of the unit is in good shape.
- One clear fault: a failed capacitor, a faulty sensor, a broken fan motor or a blocked drain pipe.
- A unit that was reliable until now: no history of repeated breakdowns.
- Parts that are easy to get: the technician can source the part for your model without a long wait.
- Good cooling once fixed: the room cools properly after the repair.
Ask the technician to explain what failed and why. A worn part on an otherwise healthy unit is a normal repair. A part that failed because of a deeper problem, such as a compressor running too hot, is a sign to think further ahead.
When a chemical overhaul makes sense
A chemical overhaul involves dismantling the indoor unit and cleaning its parts thoroughly. It suits units whose main problem is built-up dirt rather than a broken component.
Signs that point towards an overhaul include weak airflow even after a general service, a musty smell that keeps coming back, water leaking because of a clogged tray or coil, and a unit that has not been cleaned properly for a long time. If the mechanical parts are sound, an overhaul may improve airflow and cooling. Ask the technician what result to expect.
An overhaul will not fix a failing compressor, a refrigerant leak or worn electronics. If the technician finds those during the job, you are back to the repair or replace question. It is reasonable to ask the company to inspect the unit first and tell you whether an overhaul is likely to help.
When replacement makes sense
Replacement is worth considering when the unit has more than one problem, or when the same problem keeps coming back.
- Recurring faults: repeated gas top-ups, leaks or breakdowns within a short time.
- Hard-to-find parts: the technician says parts for your model are scarce or no longer made.
- Rising noise: loud rattling, grinding or vibration from the compressor or fan that a repair does not solve.
- Poor cooling despite servicing: rooms that never quite get cool even after cleaning and repair.
- High running costs: electricity bills that seem high for how much you use the aircon.
If the compressor or the outdoor unit has failed on an older system, the repair can be a large share of the cost of a new one. In that case, get a repair quote and a replacement quote side by side before you decide.

Read the aircon installation guideEfficiency and the energy label
Newer aircon models are often more efficient than older ones, especially if the old unit is a non-inverter model. That can matter in a home where the aircon runs most nights.
In Singapore, air-conditioners sold to households carry an energy label. NEA's page on the energy label explains how the label works and how to read it. Use it to compare the models you are considering, and compare like with like: the same cooling capacity and the same type of system.
The aircon types guide explains the difference between system types, such as single split and multi-split systems, which affects what you can replace and how.
Practical points for HDB flats and condos
Replacing a unit is not always a like-for-like swap. The new outdoor unit may be a different size, the piping may need changing and the trunking may need rerouting. If you live in an HDB flat, read HDB's guidance on air-conditioner installation works before you agree the scope of the work. Condominium residents should check with the management office about any rules for outdoor units and working hours.
Ask whether the quote includes removing and disposing of the old unit, new piping, new trunking and any brackets.
What repair visits cost, from published rates
Many companies publish an inspection or repair charge. The table shows the lowest matching rate each company publishes, with the source and capture date. These are advertised rates with conditions, not quotes, so check on each source whether parts are included.

Use the inspection to get a clear diagnosis. A good technician should be able to tell you what is wrong, what the repair would involve and whether they think the unit is worth repairing.

Read the aircon repair guideQuestions
Is it worth repairing an old aircon?
It can be, if the fault is isolated, parts are available and the unit was reliable until now. If faults keep coming back or parts are hard to find, compare a repair quote with a replacement quote before deciding.
Will a chemical overhaul fix a unit that does not cool?
Only if the problem is built-up dirt in the indoor unit. An overhaul will not fix a failing compressor, a refrigerant leak or worn electronics, so ask for an inspection first.
How do I compare the efficiency of new aircon models?
Use the energy label on each model and compare units of the same type and cooling capacity. NEA's page on the energy label explains how to read it.
